Pho Win Taung Caves

Nestled along the Chindwin River, Pho Win Taung Caves is a remarkable complex that boasts 947 small and large caves, all carved into a sandstone outcrop. This site is a treasure trove of art and history, featuring numerous carved Buddha statues and ancient mural paintings, including depictions of the Jataka stories. The art here dates back to between the 14th and 18th centuries, offering a glimpse into Myanmar’s rich cultural heritage.

The caves are home to many playful monkeys, and you’ll often find locals selling bananas to feed them, adding a lighthearted touch to the visit.
