Bagan: The Ancient Kingdom

Once a thriving kingdom, Bagan was home to around 8,000 pagodas and temples, of which only about 2,000 remain today. Many of these ancient structures have succumbed to the ravages of time and natural disasters. While most are relics of the past, some newer temples are adorned in gold, shining brightly against the backdrop of the lush landscape.

The Ayeyarwady River winds gracefully around the corner of Bagan, adding to the city’s scenic beauty.

To truly experience Bagan, it’s best to visit four or five of the larger temples and pagodas. The Shwesandaw Temple offers the finest view of the city, especially at sunset. While the climb is challenging, your guide can suggest alternative viewing spots if needed.

Most of the temples and pagodas date back to the 11th to 13th centuries. For a truly unforgettable experience, consider a hot air balloon ride, which, though expensive, offers a breathtaking sunrise view over this ancient landscape.

Mount Popa

Mount Popa is a sacred site, formed from the core of an extinct volcano, rising 1,518 meters above the surrounding hills. It is believed to be the home of the Nats, or spirit gods, making it a significant spiritual destination in Myanmar.

For those who prefer to relax, there is a beautiful resort where you can sit back and enjoy the stunning scenery from a distance. However, if you're up for a challenge, you can climb the 777 steps to the shrine at the top. Just be cautious of the monkeys along the way—they can be quite mischievous!
